Staines–Upon–Thames, formerly known as Staines, is a suburban town situated along the River Thames in the borough of Spelthorne in Surrey. The town is surrounded by a number of small villages including Wraysbury, Laleham and Runnymede as well as the neighbouring town of Egham.
The town’s history can be traced back to the days of the Roman Empire when the Emperor Claudius invaded Britain and was quick to construct the first Staines Bridge to provide transport links with London. The most famous historical event to occur around the town was the sealing of the Magna Carta in Runnymede in 1215. The town became an urban district in 1894 and since this point has been part of the Greater London business community.
There is much to do and see in the town, with one of the most popular attractions being the river itself. The river is easily accessible from the town centre with many local people enjoying walks and bike rides along it. This stretch of the river is often used by rowers and other boat services, with the most popular route passing through being Runnymede to Hampton Court Palace. Within the town centre itself there are a large number of familiar shops and restaurants as well as a cinema and a gym. Smaller independent shops can also be found in the town and the high street houses a large market twice a week.
Sports are very prominent in the town, with a large number of sports clubs and teams being present. The local football team, Staines Town F.C., plays in the Isthmian League premier division. Other popular sporting teams include: Staines rugby club, boat club, swimming club and volleyball club.
The town is within close proximity to London, Heathrow and the M25. This has managed to attract a number of companies to situate their major offices in the town. These include: Bupa, Siemens, British Gas and Samsung. The offices are mostly situated within walking distance of the high street and the train station, adding to the convenience of the town as a commuter workplace. There is also a large student population in the area, with the well-established Royal Holloway, University of London being situated in the neighbouring town of Egham.
Staines railway station provides links to London Waterloo and Windsor & Eton via the South West Mainline, as well as Reading via the Great Western line. The routes are all very popular with many local residents commuting to London or Reading for work. There is also a bus station which is a short five minute walk from the train station. The most popular bus routes include those to Thorpe Park and Royal Holloway University of London.
