The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead includes two towns, Windsor with its Castle built in the 11th century and Maidenhead with its railway bridge still the longest span brick built bridge in the world.
It seems the castle, a favoured weekend retreat of our King, is the bigger attraction and so Windsor attracts tourists by coach and rail from London. Actually Windsor has over 20 visitor attractions. The River Thames separates Windsor from Eton on the other side and hosts a fleet of pleasure boats.
With Windsor at its heart there is a veritable playground of attractions for residents and tourists alike. Eton College where the sons of the privileged are educated, Dorney Rowing Lake where the 2012 Olympics were held, Legoland for the children, Windsor Racecourse but also of course Royal Ascot racecourse a few miles away, the Long Walk and Savill Gardens. There is a Royal Theatre in the town where plays and pantomimes are presented and of course there is Windsor Royal Shopping situated within the Grade 1 listed Royal Station. Alfresco dining and themed restaurants complete the experience. In some ways it has the feel of London when one is there on vacation with its cafés bars and relaxed ambience.
Is it a good place for business ? It’s pleasant for the employees, there are train connections to Slough and the west main line and also a second station from where trains will take you to Waterloo in the capital. However rail connections could be better. By road there are generally good connections but there is a little work to be done getting out of town. This is a town built for tourists after all ! Aircraft fly overhead in their approach to Heathrow which is conveniently not so far away.
However despite all, it is a lovely spot by the river and as a result the rents of the shops, offices and dwellings tend to be higher than other places. You will not find a large trading estate in Windsor but there are a few light industrial units if you know where to look and even a brewery
